When armies charged across the field into a clash of swords, blending into the background wasn't much of an issue. But once more bullets started flying, the idea of uniforms that blended into surroundings?rather than sporting showy colors or shiny gold trim?took hold. The change became apparent in wars as early as the 1800s. In a precursor to camouflage, militaries around the world donned solid colors, especially greens and browns. The shading helped individual members blend in to surroundings but didn't do anything to conceal the shape of the human body, which came later.
