New technique connects multi-walled carbon nanotubes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Using a new method for precisely controlling the deposition of carbon, researchers have demonstrated a technique for connecting multi-walled carbon nanotubes to the metallic pads of integrated circuits without the high interface resistance produced by traditional fabrication techniques.

Based on electron beam-induced deposition (EBID), the work is believed to be the first to connect multiple shells of a multi-walled carbon nanotube to metal terminals on a semiconducting substrate, which is relevant to integrated circuit fabrication. Using this three-dimensional fabrication technique, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology developed graphitic nanojoints on both ends of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes, which yielded a 10-fold decrease in resistivity in its connection to metal junctions.

The technique could facilitate the integration of carbon nanotubes as interconnects in next-generation integrated circuits that use both silicon and carbon components. The research was supported by the Semiconductor Research Corporation, and in its early stages, by the National Science Foundation. The work was reported online October 4, 2012, by the journal IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology.

"For the first time, we have established connections to multiple shells of carbon nanotubes with a technique that is amenable to integration with conventional integrated circuit microfabrication processes," said Andrei Fedorov, a professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. "Connecting to multiple shells allows us to dramatically reduce the resistance and move to the next level of device performance."

In developing the new technique, the researchers relied on modeling to guide their process parameters. To make it scalable for manufacturing, they also worked toward technologies for isolating and aligning individual carbon nanotubes between the metal terminals on a silicon substrate, and for examining the properties of the resulting structures. The researchers believe the technique could also be used to connect multi-layered graphene to metal contacts, though their published research has so far focused on carbon nanotubes.

The low-temperature EBID process takes place in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) system modified for material deposition. The SEM's vacuum chamber is altered to introduce precursors of the materials that researchers would like to deposit. The electron gun normally used for imaging of nanostructures is instead used to generate low energy secondary electrons when the high energy primary electrons impinge on the substrate at carefully chosen locations. When the secondary electrons interact with hydrocarbon precursor molecules introduced into the SEM chamber, carbon is deposited in desired locations.

Unique to the EBID process, the deposited carbon makes a strong, chemically-bonded connection to the ends of the carbon nanotubes, unlike the weakly-coupled physical interface made in traditional techniques based on metal evaporation. Prior to deposition, the ends of the nanotubes are opened using an etching process, so the deposited carbon grows into the open end of the nanotube to electronically connect multiple shells. Thermal annealing of the carbon after deposition converts it to a crystalline graphitic form that significantly improves electrical conductivity.

"Atom-by-atom, we can build the connection where the electron beam strikes right near the open end of the carbon nanotubes," Fedorov explained. "The highest rate of deposition occurs where the concentration of precursor is high and there are a lot of secondary electrons. This provides a nanoscale sculpturing tool with three-dimensional control for connecting the open ends of carbon nanotubes on any desired substrate."

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes offer the promise of higher information delivery throughput for certain interconnects used in electronic devices. Researchers have envisioned a future generation of hybrid devices based on traditional integrated circuits but using interconnects based on carbon nanotubes.

Until now, however, resistance at the connections between the carbon structures and conventional silicon electronics has been too high to make the devices practical.

"The big challenge in this field is to make a connection not just to a single shell of a carbon nanotube," said Fedorov. "If only the outer wall of a carbon nanotube is connected, you really don't gain much because most of the transmission channel is under-utilized or not utilized at all."

The technique developed by Fedorov and his collaborators produces record low resistivity at the connection between the carbon nanotube and the metal pad. The researchers have measured resistance as low as approximately 100 Ohms -- a factor of ten lower than the best that had been measured with other connection techniques.

"This technique gives us many new opportunities to go forward with integrating these carbon nanostructures into conventional devices," he said. "Because it is carbon, this interface has an advantage because its properties are similar to those of the carbon nanotubes to which they are providing a connection."

The researchers don't know exactly how many of the carbon nanotube shells are connected, but based on resistance measurements, they believe at least 10 of the approximately 30 conducting shells are contributing to electrical conduction.

However, handling carbon nanotubes poses a significant challenge to their use as interconnects. When formed through the electric arc technique, for example, carbon nanotubes are produced as a tangle of structures with varying lengths and properties, some with mechanical defects. Techniques have been developed to separate out single nanotubes, and to open their ends.

Fedorov and his collaborators -- current and former graduate students Songkil Kim, Dhaval Kulkarni, Konrad Rykaczewski and Mathias Henry, along with Georgia Tech professor Vladimir Tsukruk -- developed a method for aligning the multi-walled nanotubes across electronic contacts using focused electrical fields in combination with a substrate template created through electron beam lithography. The process has a significantly improved yield of properly aligned carbon nanotubes, with a potential for scalability over a large chip area.

Once the nanotubes are placed into their positions, the carbon is deposited using the EBID process, followed by graphitization. The phase transformation in the carbon interface is monitored using Raman spectroscopy to ensure that the material is transformed into its optimal nanocrystalline graphite state.

"Only by making advances in each of these areas can we achieve this technological advance, which is an enabling technology for nanoelectronics based on carbon materials," he said. "This is really a critical step for making many different kinds of devices using carbon nanotubes or graphene."

Before the new technique can be used on a large scale, researchers will have to improve their technique for aligning carbon nanotubes and develop EBID systems able to deposit connectors on multiple devices simultaneously. Advances in parallel electron beam systems may provide a way to mass-produce the connections, Fedorov said.

"A major amount of work remains to be done in this area, but we believe this is possible if industry becomes interested," he noted. "There are applications where integrating carbon nanotubes into circuits could be very attractive."

The Power of SEO in Marketing a Small Business

With the current model of the Internet, SEO has become a staple for small businesses. Every small business needs people to start generating revenue, but the majority of cities do not offer an extensive audience. The Internet meets this demand for a diverse audience in spades, offering more viewers and potential sales than any single company could ever hope to exhaust.

The Internet has more than enough profit to go around, making it a crucial tool for businesses of all sizes. Why would companies like McDonald?s and Coca-Cola invest heavily in online advertising if there was nothing to be gained?

Having an online connection to businesses is absolute crucial for modern customers and clients. It has effectively dampened the monopoly of location that high-budget companies have the ability to exercise on smaller communities. With an online presence, a company can not only target local views, but they may also target state, national and international customers. The Internet continues to grow each year, and as it does, the potential for profit grows with it.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the ideal route for small businesses to take in the initial stages of developing a web presence. SEO is a very easy process that doesn?t require an extensive level of knowledge for a basic proficiency. What?s more is that there are thousands of excellent sites that provide insight on how to approach SEO, as well as strategies for small businesses to maximize their gains. There?s no excuse for a small business to ignore taking the basic steps necessary to drastically grow their online presence.

When someone searches online, they tend to be looking for what they want or need. Not only this, but search engines record and measure the data of who is searching for what, how frequently they are searching for it, and in some cases, their general demographic. This level of analytic power allows companies to not only hone their online performance but their offline performance as well.

Aside from this level of analytic power, SEO is extremely diverse in its ability to generate profit. There are a variety of terms to search for that often have little to no competition because they have a small overall search volume. A word that only has 100 searches per month is less attractive to an aggressive SEO strategy because it has a relatively small potential for return. The cumulative result of this is that there are a lot of small search terms that have a huge potential for profit. For every search term that gets 10,000 searches per month, there is a sea of terms with smaller increments of search results that are largely uncontested. This is the easiest window into SEO.?The biggest difference between large terms and small terms is that it can take much longer to start ranking for a large-volume keyword. The ideal strategy involves aggressively dominating low-volume keywords while beginning a long-term approach to large volume terms.

To put the power of SEO into perspective, assume that a site is getting only 1,000 views per month with 20 low-volume keywords. If this site has a single product that returns $10 of profit and they can convert only 1% of these viewers, their SEO efforts are worth $100 per month. This can often be done with under 10 hours of work, and once it?s done, it?s likely to last for a few months to a year. With a little basic maintenance, 20 hours of work could very realistically lead to $1200 in profit in a year, or about $60 per hour. It?s almost absurd that more businesses don?t pursue it.

Business Closing Despite Rise In National Halloween Sales | News ...

A survey released by National Retail Federation reports the highest year-over-year increase in consumer spending for Halloween festivities during its 10-year survey history. That is not the case for a small business in downtown Bloomington that is going out of business after 33 years of operation.

Dianne Higgins owns Costume Delight and says she has seen exactly the opposite.

?This Halloween season is been probably the worst Halloween in the 33 years, our numbers are down dramatically, the flow of customer has not been what we have expected and seen over the last several years,? Higgins says.

Higgins says online buying, short-term Halloween stores and road construction on the street where her store sits have caused her business to shrink by 50 percent compared to last year.

?With the construction being here and you can go to many other locations to get Halloween items, it has affected our Halloween business drastically,? she says.

Harv Hegarty was in Higgins? store Monday and says construction didn?t discourage him from shopping.

?I spent quite a bit today because I got a lot for the future, I would say maybe $50,? He says

Higgins says the business will continue online and but will close its doors by mid-December.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama delivered a sober warning to millions in the path of Hurricane Sandy on Monday, declaring that even though food, water and generators have been moved into position, "this is going to be a difficult storm" with long-term power and transportation outages possible.

In a direct appeal to those who live in harm's way, the president said, "Please listen to what your state and local officials are saying. When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate. Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given because this is a powerful storm."

The president made his remarks in the White House briefing room eight days before the Nov. 6 election, and a few hours after he canceled a campaign appearance in Florida to return to Washington. He turned aside a question about the storm's impact on the campaign, saying safety was his top priority.

The huge storm posed a threat to an estimated 50 million people and some of the nation's most densely populated areas. Even before a nighttime projected landfall along the mid-Atlantic Coast, dire warnings of winds, rain and storm surges prompted officials to close mass transit systems in New York, Boston and Washington, as well as Connecticut's highways. The federal bureaucracy in Washington also was shuttered.

Obama said he had spoken with the governors of all the states likely to be affected, and he added there had been "extraordinarily close coordination" among various levels of government.

Yet he stressed repeatedly the dangers posed by the slow-moving storm, and said its effects would not dissipate quickly.

"The public should anticipate that there are going to be a lot of power outages," he said.

He added, "Transportation is going to be tied up for a long time. ... We anticipate that there are going to be a lot of trees down, a lot of water."

The president said, "We're making sure that food and water and emergency generation are available for communities" that need them.

Striking one upbeat note, he said that at difficult times like the current one, "we all pull together. We look out for our friends, we look out for our neighbors and we set aside whatever issues we may have otherwise to make sure that we respond appropriately and with swiftness, and that's exactly what I anticipate is going to happen here."

Obama had been scheduled to make a campaign appearance in Florida before flying back to the nation's capital, but he scrapped those plans in favor of an immediate, bumpy flight aboard Air Force One.

Internet Marketing Rules Blog: The Importance Of Backend Selling ...

Want to make more money online in your internet business immediately? If so, then the fastest way to do so is by selling to your existing customers. This is known as ?backend marketing?, and it will account for 80% of your total business profits. Many online business owners who get sales get happy and then look for the next person to buy. But this is all wrong.

In fact, this is perhaps the biggest reason that 95% of all new online business owners will fail this year. If you don?t want to be in this 95% group, you will have to make changes. Instead of getting happy from 1 sale from a customer, get happy by getting 5 more sales from that same 1 customer.

You can profit big time if you have a backend system in place that can get your customers?to buy from you over and over again. There?s no cost to get that sale, so you earn 100% profits on each sale. So if you sell a $50 product, and it costs you $50 just to make 1 sale, then you have just acquired a customer for free. And there?s nothing wrong with that.

If you can sell another $50 product to this same 1 customer, you would have earned $50 for free, without doing much to get your customer to buy from you again. Are you catching my drift here? It?s more profitable to chase after your current customers than it is to chase after prospects.

So if you don?t have a backend marketing system in place, now is the perfect time to get one. The best way to start staying in contact with your customers is with an autoresponder. An autoresponder is simply a program that automatically sends out emails to the people who ?opts-in? to your list.

A good autoresponder service is a company named Aweber. You will want to email out to your customers every 4-14 days (depending on what you sell). In some businesses, it?s not necessary to email your customers often, but in other niches, it?s absolutely critical that you stay in contact with your customers very often (every 4 days).

Like any guru will tell you, the money is in the list. And the money is definitely in a customer list. Not a prospect list; but a CUSTOMER list. I know how bad you want to get more sales on a daily basis, but you have to understand that you will get more new sales quicker if you?re selling to a group of 500 customers? instead of 500 prospects.

You see you have to understand? most prospects are just looking for something for free, instead of looking to buy. So you can?t waste alot of time on people like this. I would focus on my customer list about 5 times as hard as I would with a prospect list. With a mentality like this, you can?t go wrong.

Take these tips to have success online by selling to your backend customers. They will make you wealthy.

Good luck with earning more money in your online business today.

Therefore is very important for business owners to create an online presence by promoting their brand and attracting good traffic towards their website. Incorporating Search engine marketing in marketing strategies is the most efficient method to gain an online presence for your brand in the e-commerce world.

SEM is basically a marketing strategy that helps the online business owners to increase the usability and visibility of their website and attract a good amount of visitors towards their website. There are different techniques that are used in the search engine marketing process that include the following;-

keyword selection:

In this marketing strategy the business owners employ techniques to associate the website with relevant and specific keywords. This is considered the first step of the marketing strategy where different keywords that are used for the website are analysed and the one that is most relevant and unique is targeted to increase the traffic of the website.

Website saturation:

In this method the presence of the website on the search engine is determined. This is achieved by checking the

  • site saturation- the number of website pages that are indexed by the crawlers
  • site popularity- the number of backlinks associated to the website

key performance indicators (KPI):

Here you need to identify the most important KPIs for your site and frequently monitor them. These indicators usually include the number of site visits, number of visits made from organic keyword traffic, number of visits made from paid keyword traffic and many more.

PPC advertising:

Pay per click advertising has become one of the most important marketing strategies that help with improving the ranking of the site on the search engines. Successful and top companies provide advertising space on their website associated to relevant keywords. All the advertisers need to do is to pay them for the number of clicks that are made on the advertising. Through this method potential customers visit your site and most of them turn into return customers.

Paid inclusion in search engines:

Here a particular amount is paid to the search engine providers for the inclusion of your website advertising into their search results. This allows your advertisement to be displayed on the top of the search results which can help you in attracting good traffic for your site.

If you find any difficulty in the above mentioned process and need further guidance then you can contact the experts from digital media agency who can help you out.

foodconsumer.org - Drinking tea may prevent ovarian cancer

By David Liu, PHD

Monday Oct 29, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) --Andy H. Lee at School of Public Health, Curtin University in Perth, WA, Australia ?and colleagues reported a study in Cancer Epidemiology suggesting that drinking tea may cut risk of ovarian cancer.

The researchers compared 500 incident cases of varian cancer with 500 controls, both groups of Chinese women at a mean age of 59 years for tea consumption and found that after adjustment for potential confounders, women who drank green, black and or oolong teas were about 70 percent less likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, compared to those who did not drink.

The subjects for the study were recruited from ?four public hospitals in Guangzhou, China and dietary information on tea drinking was collected through a questionnaire.

The researchers found women without ovarian cancer were found more likely more often to drink more tea than those who were diagnosed with the disease, 78.8% versus 51.4%.

The association between tea drinking and risk of ovarian cancer was affected by the duration of drinking, the number of cups and quantity of tea consumed and the amount of dried tea leaves brewed.

The researchers concluded "Regular tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer for southern Chinese women."

The Hot Wheels Camaro: no longer just a toy

By Paul A. Eisenstein, TheDetroitBureau.com

Chevrolet and Mattel have had a long and prosperous relationship. The toy company has been producing matchbox-sized replicas of the Camaro since 1968, a year after the real Chevy pony car first landed in showrooms.

At the upcoming SEMA auto show in Las Vegas, the automaker plans to return the favor, introducing the first production version of the?Chevrolet Camaro to bear a Hot Wheels badge.

TheDetroitBureau: Iconic London 'black' cab could soon vanish

Chevy has used the Hot?Wheels theme for several years at its SEMA stand. Last year, it positioned a bright yellow version of the Camaro at the base of a life-size track.? But now the automaker plans to actually add a Hot Wheels edition to its lineup.? It will come as a $6,995 upgrade on both the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro and Camaro convertible. Sales are scheduled to begin early next year.

For the money, the special edition will get a bright metallic paint scheme, special graphics, red-lined 21-inch wheels and Hot Wheels flame badges on the fenders and trunk lid.

TheDetroitBureau: Nation?s fastest highway opens

The Hot Wheels Camaro will feature matte-black touches around the hood and taillight surrounds. And the upgrade will also borrow some trim pieces from the high-performance Camaro ZL1 package, including the rear spoiler, front grille and front splitter.

The black leather-trimmed interior will boast Hot Wheels logos embroidered on the front seats, which are finished in red and black stitching.? The Hot Wheels flame will adorn the door interiors with special Hot Wheels Edition sill plates completing the package.

Chevrolet?s MyLink infotainment package will come standard.

TheDetroitBureau: Chevy moving up-market with Sonic Dusk

The Hot Wheels Camaro can be ordered with either the Chevy 2LT package with its 3.6-liter V-6, rated at its stock 323 horsepower, or the 400-hp 2SS package featuring the 6.2-liter L99 V-8.? The 2SS will be delivered with a dual-mode exhaust system, as will the 2LT equipped with a manual gearbox.

Chevy can only hope to match the success of the 1:64 edition Camaros that Mattel has sold by the millions over the last 44 years. The pony car was one of 16 original Hot Wheels models ? a favor being returned as the Chevrolet Hot Wheels Camaro becomes the first production car to carry the toy series? name.

The DetroitBureau: Honda designs car exclusively for women

The project was launched in 2010 and initially was focused on the concept model unveiled at the SEMA show last year. The final production design for the 2013 street car was taken from one of five sketches worked up by Hot Wheels chief designer Felix Holst.

?It?s been nearly 20 years since I started designing?cars for Hot Wheels and I have yet to drive one home,? said Holst, the vice president of creative for the Mattel Wheels Division. ?Personally, I can?t wait to open the doors and see the Hot Wheels Camaro sitting in the garage.?

iPhone 5 vs. Nexus 4: Spec shoot out

Google and LG have just announced their all-new Android 4.2 flagship phone, the Nexus 4 and it's a doozy. We all know Apple and the iPhone 5 are more about experience and ecosystem than speeds and feeds, but that doesn't mean we're not still curious how exactly those specs stack up. After all, specs are the engine that drive the experience, and while Apple's end-to-end integration lets them get better results with less horsepower, it's still fun to see what Android manufacturers are able to cram into their devices.

We also tossed in a couple other Android flagship devices, including the ubiquitous Samsung Galaxy S3 and stellar HTC One X as well as the also upcoming Windows 8 Phone, the Nokia Lumia 920.

So check out the chart up top, and if you want to know more about the Nexus 4, our Mobile Nations sibling site, Android Central, has you coved:

The next wave: Google refreshes its Nexus line

Android CentralThere won't be a launch event, but that doesn't mean launches aren't happening. Google today announced a new Nexus phone, along with a new tablet -- and updated a current one. Here's the breakdown of what you need to know:

  • Nexus 4 by LG: There's not a whole lot about this phone we didn't know, but it's now official. You'll be able to get an unlocked Nexus 4 starting Nov. 13. There's an 8GB version for $299, and a 16GB version for $349. There currently are no LTE versions, but it's coming to T-Mo U.S. on contract. UK prices start at £239.
  • Nexus 7 refreshed: This guy's been around for a few months now. The bottom end is now a 16GB version for $199, and 32GB for $249. You can find it in various retailers already.
  • Nexus 10 announced: Samsung's back with a 10-inch Nexus tablet. Pure Google. It's running $399 for a 16GB version, and $499 for a 32GB model. It'll be available Nov. 13 in the U.S., UK, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan. In the UK, prices start at £319.
  • Android 4.2: And, of course, we've got a new update to Android. It's still called Jelly Bean. New features include "photo sphere" for the camera, which basically is a 360-degree panorama. The keyboard's gained gesture typing and improved prediction. There's a new "Daydream" feature for when your device is docked. Tablets get support for multiple users. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

New Dutch coalition govt seeks $20 billion in cuts

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? A new Dutch ruling coalition made up of the pro-free market VVD party and the center-left Labor Party plans to slash government spending by ?16 billion ($20.6 billion) by 2017.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he and Labor leader Diederik Samsom agreed Monday to a policy blueprint for their new coalition, an announcement that came after weeks of closed-door talks aimed at bridging their parties' ideological gulf.

"Getting government finances in order is an absolute priority," Rutte said as he gave the financial targets for cuts.

It's his second term as leader of this European Union nation of 16 million. His new administration is expected to be sworn in next week.

The blueprint underscored that Rutte's second government will continue the fiscally conservative policies of his first coalition, which was a staunch supporter of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's tough line on financial responsibility as the EU struggles to rein in its debt crisis.

Samsom conceded that the deal means more belt-tightening for the Netherlands, one of Europe's most economically stable nations and one of only a handful of EU states to have kept its top AAA government credit rating throughout the crisis.

"You can't say you're happy with this deal, because everybody will have to make sacrifices," Samsom told reporters in Parliament.

VVD and Labor together hold 79 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives after both recorded big gains in Sept. 12 election.

That healthy majority is in stark contrast to Rutte's first administration, which was a minority coalition supported by the Freedom Party of maverick anti-Islam Euroskeptic lawmaker Geert Wilders.

Rutte's first government collapsed earlier this year after 18 months in office when Wilders refused to support a far-reaching austerity program aimed at bringing the Dutch government debt within EU guidelines.

The policy platform made clear that the Dutch will remain strong supporters of the European Union.

"Europe is of great importance for our peace, security and prosperity," the 81-page document said.

Rutte said his party had made "an important concession" to Labor by agreeing to cut tax relief on the mortgages of the wealthy. Rutte's VVD had long pledged not to lower mortgage relief, including at the September elections.

The blueprint also said the Netherlands will not try to host the Olympic Games, saying that successfully bidding for and organizing the Olympics "brings financial risks. There is little support for this in a time of crisis and austerity."

In the past, the Dutch had considered bidding for the Olympics in 2008 ? exactly a century after Amsterdam last staged the games.

The new coalition also pledged to lift the age at which Dutch youths can buy alcohol from 16 to 18 years.
