First Person: Potential for Historic Blizzard in Eastern Massachusetts

Yahoo! News is gathering brief first-person accounts, photos and video from the severe winter weather in the northeastern United States. Here's one resident's story.

FIRST PERSON | NEAR BOSTON -- The streets are deserted. It is 8:30 p.m. on a Friday night. The Blizzard of 2013 is just getting truly underway. Around my neighborhood tree branches and hedges sag distortedly under the weight of a dense, pasty wet snow. Their more important struggle is to hold up that rapidly increasing weight while facing whipsaw-like winds that are currently gusting to 50 mph and higher. My struggle is to be able to see anything out of my windows as the high velocity snow paste sticks to the exterior of my house.

Having lived through the Blizzard of 1978, I have always "enjoyed" the moments when the meteorologists try to frame a current storm in the image of that historic snowfall. Having just moments ago experienced an episode of "thundersnow," perhaps this time the storm will measure up to the yardstick of 1978's monster storm. The governor of Massachusetts issued all non-emergency vehicular traffic off of the roadways at 4 p.m. this afternoon, looking out the window now, that was clearly a wise decision. Residents of several low lying coastal areas have been asked to evacuate as they await overnight developments in the storm and the arrival of an expected serious high tide in the morning.

This storm has produced a significant amount of snow already and reportedly, at this hour, the storm is only just beginning to get cranked up. The same could be said for local anxiety. The sounds of winds rattling the windows, the groan of plow trucks as they try to keep the roadways clear, a desolate moonscape of wind-driven snow. Let's see what first light brings. Some outlets have labeled this storm "Nemo," I don't know why. At this moment I can say with certainty that I had no interest in finding it.
