Good Saturday morning Pilgrims!

Today?s Beal Deal guest has gone by many names in her career?including Dancing Thunder at some point?but we lovingly know her as Kim Krause Berg. You know those people that you can?t help smile and want to hug every time you see them? Yeah, I feel that way every time I see Kim. She has a kind heart and a mind for usability that is pretty much unmatched in my humble opinion.

I reached out to Kim to ask her about the sale of her forum, her passion in life, and why usability is critical to any marketing campaign.

1.??? You built Cre8asiteforums into an awesome resource. What was the key to its success?

The legacy of the forums, I think, is that the membership then and now connected with each other into a family

When I started the Cre8pc Web Site Promotion club in 1998 in Egroups/Yahoo! Clubs, it was because by then I?d been on online chats, clubs, newsgroups and email discussions for 3 years and learned the value of networking and sharing information.? I was in a position where I was learning a great deal in web design, search engines and SEO.? Not only could I share my own tests and successes, others would do the same.

By August of 2002 that small club had a following and Cre8asiteforums was launched with the help of some of the members and free hosting by a very good friend of mine.? The legacy of the forums, I think, is that the membership then and now connected with each other into a family.? My only ?rules? were to treat everyone with respect, leave your ego at the door, and before posting ask yourself if what you are writing is true, necessary and kind.? We became ?the thinkers? forums? because I and many members love to look past the surface of topics.? You know how the questions are the same in forums like Cre8asiteforums and so are the answers.? The membership itself never seemed to be satisfied with or interested in topics with simple answers.? They prefer to pull out another dimension to explore.

To be honest, I?ve seen so many forums in the web development, design, online marketing space that try to start out and fizzle out very fast.? Some have come to Cre8asiteforums for help, thinking we must, have a magic formula.? They ask if they should buy posts and make up fake members.? Crazy stuff like that.? They have it all wrong.? You can?t fake being real.? Brett Tabke, Dani Horiwitz of DaniWeb, Jill Whalen, the late Jim Wilson of Jim?s World, Rand Fishkin of the SEOMoz community, Aaron Wall from SEOBook and when he took over Threadwatch?..each has/had ?extraordinary passion for their work.? Just look at Aaron?s list of forums??to see which ones exist today.

In the earliest days of Cre8asiteforums I made so many mistakes because I never felt that the forums was mine.? I refused to make decisions without getting everyone?s opinion and trust me, that habit cost me both revenue and people.? It was many years before I had the confidence to accept my role as forums ?mom? and trust that the moderators and membership had full faith and trust in me.? My personal style is similar to Rand Fishkin?s (who was a moderator once), in that I shared my life with the community.? When you let members, and especially the moderators who volunteer their time to help out into your life, they invite you into their lives.? This is how the ?family? part of the forums is created and why selling it was a big deal to me.? I needed to know that every member and moderator would be taken care of.

2. What made Jim Boykin the perfect buyer for the Cre8asiteforums?

It had been a very bad year. I lost all trust in anyone from the SEO industry and lost confidence in my work.?

At first I didn?t want to talk to him.? When I put it up for sale I was laughed at for trying to sell a forums that wasn?t traditionally a revenue maker.? Everyone wanted to throw it to the wolves and stuff it with ads. ?No value was given to the community. I wanted to move on out of the SEO industry and slip away but not at the cost of the membership and moderators.

Jim persisted and I agreed to talk to him on the phone.? I?ll never forget that day.? It had been a very bad year. I lost all trust in anyone from the SEO industry and lost confidence in my work.? There was only one possible solution I had been visualizing on a daily basis and wouldn?t you know it?? Jim described that exact plan to me that day!? He not only made an offer to purchase Cre8asiteforums, but he wanted to hire me to continue to run it.? He would give me a team to handle the technical side and the time consuming Administrator duties so that I could be ?out front? with the members.? But he wasn?t done there.? He had no plans to change the forums into an AdSense nightmare.? In fact, he would stay out of my way and together we could work on community building and ways to reward and support the membership.

Then, he asked if I would work for him because he loved my usability work and wanted to bring in an expert to grow the usability conversions arm of his growing company.? And oh yes, I could work from my home office and speak at conferences with the Ninjas.? I also knew he was buying WebmasterWorld, which made me laugh out loud when he told me (and yes, I kept that secret!)? At some conference somewhere, I remember running into Brett Tabke in a pub and we briefly shared that we were not sure where to go next with our forums or even if forums were needed anymore.? If Brett trusted Jim, so would I.

3. You?ve seen lots of trends in the industry over the years, yet ?usability? remains the foundation of any marketing campaign. Why is that?

I admit I have way too much fun proving my worth around marketers.

Wait. What?? I rarely hear ?usability? and ?foundation of any marketing campaign? in the same sentence.? In fact, the term ?usability? has the same status as Lord Voldemort, as in ?You-Know-Who? and ?He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? from the Harry Potter books. Only I refer to usability as ?That-thing-that-must-not-be-said?.

Site owners invest in web site promotion rather than web site design. Their budget is funneled into PPC, AdSense, paid links, sponsored positions, Facebook ads, local search directories, SEO for rank, keyword research, etc. but not the site design or landing pages.? Remember web rings, link directories, banner exchanges, and all the tools built for search engine submission?? There were dueling papers on the mathematical equations behind Google?s PR score. Businesses had to pay $300 annually to be added to Yahoo!?s directory.

If a homepage, product page, category page, or a paid link to a specific landing are not designed to carry out the promise that brought the searcher there, what is the point?? User experience, calls to action, usability conversions, customer experience and accessibility so that all people can engage with the page marketers paid to get them to has never been a foundation for marketing.? Just look at the agendas of the leading conferences in the search engine marketing industry.

Still, usability isn?t the miracle cure and in all honesty, it?s one small part of the puzzle for what?s truly needed for exceptional online marketing.? For starters, who is a web site ?usable? for?? I love to start these conversations with people because I can see their light bulbs going off.? They?ll start rattling off their perfect customer, but have no idea why Google Analytics indicates their customers are not finishing tasks.? Human behavior, emotions, environments, disabilities, heck, even people like me who need help to see web pages are not part of the search marketing discussion.? Well, at least for most.

I admit I have way too much fun proving my worth around marketers.? One such moment was when Jim and I were discussing a client?s homepage.? If ads are the goal of the site I leave them to that fantasy.? But this was a case where the revenue stream was hiding.? I asked Jim to find it.? Fifteen minutes and many guesses later I couldn?t stand it anymore and I showed him the tiny text link the homepage had that led to where the company expected to earn its revenue.? I LOVE moments like this, especially when a client insists they don?t need a usability conversions audit but are more than happy to invest in keyword research.

4. You?re a consultant, speaker, and a writer. What do you enjoy the most, and why?

Writing.? I?ve always been a writer.? I was a poet and love creative writing. I wrote some plays, studied Journalism, was the Editor of my college newspaper, and I once thought I?d settle into Broadcast writing.? I write because I need the outlet.? Also, my mind works very fast and when I speak or talk on the phone it feels like the words pile up and every 4^th one comes out.? Writing lets me slow down the word train.

5. What?s your passion outside of the marketing industry?

I?m deeply connected to Native American spirituality.

I?m extremely sensitive to the energy fields around people, trees, and sometimes entire environments.? I?ve always ?known? there?s ?more? and been determined to know about It.? I?m deeply connected to Native American spirituality, by ancestry and what feels like a Soul linkup, as well as Buddhism, Zen, Judaism, ancient history, physics and metaphysics.? I?ve found that it?s impossible to have a closed mind when you ?feel? people and the world around you.? I read everything on these topics and my favorite conversations are those that break boundaries and go places some people don?t dare to think about.? I?m insatiably curious.

6. You now go by ?Kim Kopp Krause Berg.? Are you done adding names or is this just a game to mess with our heads?

Just be glad you didn?t know me when I was called Dancing Thunder!?

Just be glad you didn?t know me when I was called Dancing Thunder!? I was born Kimberly Ann Kopp. When I married my kids? dad, I changed my middle name to Kopp because my Dad had no sons and I wanted to keep that name.? I was Kim Kopp Krause then.? I kept the Krause name even after my divorce.? We had a mediated divorce, where we drafted our own divorce agreement, I typed it up and our joint lawyer made it legal.? When I remarried in 2004, my kids wanted me to have their last name, so I changed my middle name to Krause.? In Facebook, my high school has an active page, so I brought back Kopp so I could be found.? It was a far easier thing when I was known simply as ?DT?.

Does Elections During a Holy Mass Constitute a Liturgical Abuse? Has Fr.Bonaventure Pereira of Divine Mercy Church Bhayander contributed to Community Welfare Fund?

Currently the Archdiocese of Mumbai is having elections to fill up the posts of its Parish Pastoral Council.

Are these elections free and fair?

In any election any elector can also be a candidate and then and only then ,can the election be considered to be free and fair.

However to be a candidate for the Parish Pastoral Council in Mumbai there are three conditions:

1.Candidate should be a catholic.

2.Candidate should be 25 years old.

3.Candidate should be a member of the core group.

Thus the bulk majority of electors can never be a candidate as per the rules and only the ten or fifteen members of the core group can stand for elections and hence the said election can never be said to be ?free and fair.

In fact if the Church in Mumbai has taken a decision that candidates shall have to be members of the core group then those elections should have been held within the Core Group itself ?and the general congregation should never have been involved since only the core group members know how ?the canditate works and whether he/she is worth electing.

Two and a half years ago vide my e mail dated 17/09/10 I had written to the Archbishop of Mumbai that elections are not one of the 7 sacraments and hence should never be held during the mass.It is common knowledge that if one of the parties to any marriage is a non catholic,the marriage ceremony is either held before or after the mass and can never be part of the mass as it is not a sacrament.Thus the mass is considered highly sacred.

What is the justification for having elections during a mass?

Doesnt holding elections during mass constitute a LITURGICAL ABUSE?

If there is any justification from the authorities then why are property sale proposals also not discussed and finalised during mass?

We have a Priest who was a Kalina Parish Priest some 13 years ago who showed a plot as fully encroached and undervalued a church ?property ?and sold roughly 700 meters of land donated to the Church by the Miranda family for just Rs.3,51,000/- in the year 1995.Today the new owners have evicted the 3 catholic tenants and a case against the fourth tenant is pending.The Church has not filed an FIR against the culprits till today and in fact have given a clean chit to the accused against whom an FIR has been filed.The said Priest Fr.John Rumao has been granted interim anticipatory bail by the Sessions Court Mumbai till April 8th ,2013.

We,have a Parish Priest who defamed a person publicly from the pulpit in Kalina and the Cardinal did nothing about it( Not the ?current Parish Priest).

We have a Parish Priest Fr.Bonaventure Pereira of Divine Mercy Church Bhayander who has put up the names of several defaulters of the Community Welfare Fund on the notice board of the parish. Despite announcements made during the mass that the said list would be put up ?only on 31st March 2013,yet the said list was put up on ?17th March 2013.The said Parish Priest also gets a ? salary does ?he contribute to the said fund?Has he contributed to Community Welfare Fund in all the previous parishes where he was posted?

The list can go on and on where we have instances of Priests giving us excellent sermons but not practising what they preach.

We , are sure that this issue will also be swept under the carpet .We have newspapers which carry catholic news in India AND who publish ?selective news.Not a single catholic newspaper carried a single article regarding the consecration of a Protestant Bishop by a Catholic Bishop of Allahabad, which is a GRAVE LITURGICAL ABUSE.The said Bishops resignation has now been accepted by the previous Pope.

Some Priests today do not ?have a VOCATION but they ON VACATION.Is it their job to save souls or Has making money and insulting people become a full time business?

The laity of Mumbai has remained silent and hence these type of Priests have become bolder and bolder and as time goes their numbers may also increase.I think the concerned officials should stop fooling the members of the Laity and should become more Christ Like.

Priests should also expose these type of Priests as all the Priests get a bad name due to the unpriestly acts of a few Priests.We do believe in the sin of complicity.

How many Priests are really ready to imitate Christ?

Would Christ have done the acts which these type of Priests have done?

Despite several letters sent to the Pro Nuncio/Cardianl no action has been taken.

Will Pope Francis approve and do the same acts which these Priests have done? Let any priest from Mumbai give me the justification for these acts.

I would be wrong if I use the same paint brush to paint all the Priests because I believe that as of today there are only a few bad apples but if the administration does not act then there will be more bad apples and less good ones and hence this should be nipped in the bud.

Michael Jackson civil jury pool grows to 60 people

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A court has ended the first week of jury selection in a civil case over Michael Jackson's death with 60 potential jurors selected.

Jury selection will resume Monday and is expected to stretch into the following week in an effort to find enough people to hear a case filed by Jackson's mother against concert giant AEG Live.

Katherine Jackson claims the company failed to properly investigate and supervise the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Jackson's June 2009 death.

Potential jurors have filled out a 24-page questionnaire that assesses their knowledge of the case, Jackson's family and their views on celebrities and multimillion dollar verdicts.

In-person questioning of potential jurors will begin on Wednesday.

AEG has denied wrongdoing.

Breakthrough in chemical crystallography

Apr. 5, 2013 ? A research team led by Professor Makoto Fujita of the University of Tokyo, Japan, and complemented by Academy Professor Kari Rissanen of the University of Jyv?skyl?, Finland, has made a fundamental breakthrough in single-crystal X-ray analysis, the most powerful method for molecular structure determination.

X-ray single-crystal diffraction (SCD) analysis has the intrinsic limitation that the target molecule must be obtained as single crystals. Now, Professor Fujita's team at the University of Tokyo together with Academy Professor Rissanen at the University of Jyv?skyl? have established a new protocol for SCD analysis that does not require the crystallisation of the target molecule. In this method, a very small crystal of a porous complex absorbs the target molecule from the solution, enabling the crystallographic analysis of the structure of the absorbed guest along with the host framework.

As the SCD analysis is carried out with only one crystal, smaller than 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.1 mm in size, the required amount of the target molecule can be as low as 80 ng. Fujita's and Rissanen's work reports the structure determination of a scarce marine natural product from only 5 ?g of it. Many natural and synthetic compounds for which chemists have almost given up the hope of analysing crystallographically can now be easily and precisely characterised by this method.

Obama may offer Social Security cuts

President Barack Obama, in a move cast as a compromise with congressional Republicans, will include in his budget to be offered April 10 an inflation formula that will slow the growth of Social Security and veterans benefits, a senior administration official confirmed on Friday.

The president will propose a different way to measure the consumer price index, one referred to as "chained CPI," which is supported by key Republicans in Congress. The official said chained CPI will be offered in the hopes of getting Republicans to bend on closing tax-cut loopholes for top earners to create revenue and lower the deficit.

Chained CPI will alter cost-of-living calculations for entitlements including Social Security, slowing the growth of benefits, and decrease benefits for disabled veterans?reasons why chained CPI is opposed by some Democrats, progressives and others.

Supporters say chained CPI is a more accurate way to measure inflation and reduce spending.

The president's budget, according to the official, will also:

-Aim to reduce the deficit by $1.8 trillion over 10 years

-Increase tobacco taxes to cover the president's universal pre-K program

-Close a loophole that currently permits individuals to simultaneously collect full disability and unemployment benefits

-Set limits on tax-preferred retirement accounts for millionaires and billionaires

The president's budget by law was due Feb. 4 of this year. Republicans have criticized the administration for missing that deadline for what Republicans contend is a political maneuver designed to put Congress out front in what is expected to be a challenging budget negotiation process.

Set up by the newspaper industry in response to a government threat to introduce privacy legislation, the 13-member Press Council includes representatives of publishers, members of the public (the appointments are publicly advertised), and one from the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the leading journalists' union in Britain and Ireland.

Publications that are members, including all of the national newspapers, agree to be bound by its code of conduct, and to recognize the decisions of the council and ombudsman. Membership in the council is not mandatory, but publications that are members are generally subject to lesser damages in the event of successful court actions against them, as a result of the council and ombudsman being "recognized in statute."

The ombudsman, currently?John Horgan, a former Labor party politician and journalism professor, adjudicates on complaints from subjects of newspaper stories, and if agreement cannot be found between all parties involved, he can make a ruling or refer the complaint to the Press Council for a final decision.

Seamus Dooley, the Irish secretary of the NUJ, says regulation has not been proscriptive.

The Press Council's code of conduct is more carrot than stick, and starts with a full-throated defense of a free press, saying: "The freedom to publish is vital to the right of the people to be informed. This freedom includes the right of a newspaper to publish what it?considers to be news, without fear or favour, and the right to comment upon it."

It goes on, however, to detail what the Press Council sees as the correct way for publications to operate, although the tone is more aspirational than condemnatory. For example, retractions must be printed in a prominent place and ordinary members of the public are entitled to privacy.

"We're quite happy with the way it's going," says retired business journalist Martin Fitzpatrick, NUJ's appointee to the Irish Press Council. "We've never had a hugely contentious press. There is a degree of timidity, and you could fault them for not foreseeing the onset of the financial crisis, but that's not down to regulation."

The high opinion of press regulation is not universally held, however, even in the NUJ's Irish ranks.

"[British] newspapers did horrible things, but they also uncovered horrible things that were done. The effect of regulation will not be the protection of people who, through no fault of their own, find themselves at the center of press attention, it will be the protection of the rich and powerful," says Gerard Cunningham, chairman of the NUJ's freelance branch in Ireland.

Mr. Cunningham, who formerly worked in the US, says the culture of the British press is, for demonstrable reasons, comparable to other countries only in very general terms.

"This is about all about competition," he says. "Maybe The New York Times and, to a lesser extent, The Christian Science Monitor have a national reach, but they're not really competing against a regional metro daily," he says.

This situation with each US metro market having a dominant player is in stark contrast with Britain, where 11 national dailies, a clutch of regional newspapers, a few specialist titles, and an independent national Scottish press all slug it out for the same pound.

"The British market is intensely competitive and they try to break every story. They really do publish and be damned," says Cunningham.

In contrast, a staggering 19 daily papers are available on the newsstands nationwide in Ireland, though nine of these are rarely read imports from the US and UK and three more are regional titles from Northern Ireland. Of the seven popular national newspapers in Ireland, two tabloids are "Celtified" editions of British newspapers and two more are hybrids of British and Irish material. All four are members of the Press Council, though their British equivalents object to press regulation.

Having a regulated press hasn't stopped the Irish government from indicating it may seek further powers, though. In February 2012, the publication by the Irish Daily Star of candid photographs of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, prompted Irish Justice Minister Alan Shatter to consider enacting new, stricter privacy legislation. The government has yet to do so, however.
