Feb. 5, 2013 ? Marital satisfaction -- so critical to health and happiness -- generally declines over time. A brief writing intervention that helps spouses adopt a more objective outlook on marital conflict could be the answer.
New Northwestern University research shows that this writing intervention, implemented through just three, seven-minute writing exercises administered online, prevents couples from losing that loving feeling.
"I don't want it to sound like magic, but you can get pretty impressive results with minimal intervention," said Eli Finkel, lead author of the study and professor of psychology at Northwestern.
The study involved 120 couples, half assigned the reappraisal intervention and the other not. Every four months for two years all spouses reported their relationship satisfaction, love, intimacy, trust, passion and commitment. They also provided a fact-based summary of the most significant disagreement they had experienced with their spouse in the preceding four months.
The reappraisal writing task asked participants to think about their most recent disagreement with their partner from the perspective of a neutral third party who wants the best for all involved.
Replicating prior research, both groups exhibited declines in marital quality over Year 1. But for the spouses who experienced the reappraisal intervention -- who completed the writing exercise three times during Year 2 -- the decline in marital satisfaction was entirely eliminated. Although couples in the two conditions fought just as frequently about equally severe topics, the intervention couples were less distressed by these fights, which helped them sustain marital satisfaction.
"Not only did this effect emerge for marital satisfaction, it also emerged for other relationship processes -- like passion and sexual desire -- that are especially vulnerable to the ravages of time," Finkel said. "And this isn't a dating sample. These effects emerged whether people were married for one month, 50 years or anywhere in between."
This finding may be especially important given that low marital quality can have serious health implications, according to Finkel.
Finkel cites data that among coronary artery bypass patients, those who experienced high marital satisfaction shortly after the surgery were three times more likely to be alive 15 years later than those who experienced low marital satisfaction.
"Marriage tends to be healthy for people, but the quality of the marriage is much more important than its mere existence," Finkel said. "Having a high-quality marriage is one of the strongest predictors of happiness and health. From that perspective, participating in a seven-minute writing exercise three times a year has to be one of the best investments married people can make."

Using Differentiated Instruction Techniques to Teach Math to Young Kids At Home?Children are becoming more and more discouraged. They are content to sit silently in the back of the classroom or automatically look to the teacher for correct answers instead of trying themselves. If the teacher gives them the answer each time, it enables a dependent mentality. This mentality does not foster the active learning that is necessary for a child to succeed. In some extreme circumstances, students have drifted below the radar for their entire academic career and received a high school diploma without achieving even the most rudimentary of mathematical proficiency. This epidemic is rooted in several pervading inadequacies in our education system. One problem is that the average classroom is not a place where children feel completely comfortable asking questions or expressing concerns for fear of ridicule from their peers. This is not conducive to a healthy learning environment.

Schools need to stick to strict schedules, so teachers sometimes move from one lesson to the next before all of the students have had a chance to learn the material. What?s more, their instruction techniques might not resonate with all of the students, and in larger classrooms, individual attention can be next to impossible. This results in a growing educational deficit, as some children fall behind and are unable to catch up due to the fast pace and uniformity of instruction. By using varying teaching techniques when difficulties are detected, parents can help children to learn efficiently, which allows them to excel in the classroom.

Critically acclaimed?director-choreographer?Stacey Flaster, of Highland Park, and vocal coach?Elizabeth?Fauntleroy, of Lincolnshire, announce the launch of The?Performer?s School,?Chicagoland?s premiere performing arts school in the north shore area.
The school kicks off with audition workshops?for sixth through twelfth-graders who have a strong interest in the?performing arts.?A dance intensive and week-long summer program are also?planned.??All classes and workshops will?take place at the Highwood Recreation Center, 432 Green Bay Rd., in Highwood.
?We are pleased that the theater space created at the Highwood?Recreation Center will provide a home for our classes,? said?Fauntleroy. ?Stacey and I have more than 40 years of?professional theater?experience combined, and our passion is helping students?be successful for auditions and on stage.?
The classes are the outgrowth of private coaching and highly successful?classes that began in 2012 under the tutelage of Flaster and?Fauntleroy. ?Students who have a dream of being successful in theater?will gain confidence after learning tools and skills,? said Flaster.??We will provide students with?personalized coaching on songs and monologues to optimize their audition?experiences.?If it helps forge a path?into a performing career, so much the better.?
The audition workshops will be held on Feb. 9 and 23, March 16 and April 6. The individual sessions will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (March 16 class is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The cost is?$200?for each workshop. Students can sign up for any number of workshops, and?there is a discount with registration of two or more classes. Workshops are designed for sicth grade to twelfth grade students with?performance experience, either in?school, community or professional theater.
Flaster will also lead a musical theater dance intensive for?serious musical theater students. Classes are scheduled for April 13, 20 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The class will feature?different styles of?musical theater dance each week. The?intensive costs $240 for all three days. All levels of dance are encouraged to register.
The school will offer a five-day audition clinic from June 10-14,?from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Students will be coached in cold readings,?monologues, dance, voice, audition etiquette, acting through song,?choosing?audition repertory, resume and photo presentation. The summer clinic?costs $650 for the full week. Space is?limited, so early registration is encouraged.

MOSCOW (AP) ? The artistic director of the Bolshoi ballet said he knows who ordered an acid attack that left him with severe burns to his eyes and face but won't say, voicing hope that investigators will soon name the perpetrator.
Sergei Filin checked out of a Moscow hospital Monday and headed to Germany for further rehabilitation.
Filin, 42, wore shades and a bandage on his head, and skin on his face was red and swollen from burns. But he spoke energetically and seemed to be in a good mood as he walked out of the hospital accompanied by his wife.
"My body is full of strength and energy," he told reporters.
Filin earlier told Russian state television that he knew who ordered the attack but wouldn't give names. "My heart tells me who did it," Filin told Rossiya 24 television in an interview broadcast late Sunday.
He said that investigators would visit him in Germany as part of the continuing probe.
An attacker threw sulphuric acid in Filin's face in Moscow on Jan. 17, as he was returning home from work.
"I felt enormous, unbearable pain," Filin recalled in the television interview. "I fell face down in the snow and started rubbing my face and eyes with snow."
His colleagues said the attack on Filin could be in retaliation for his selection of certain dancers over others for the prized roles.
The Bolshoi has been plagued by intrigue and infighting that have led to the departure of several artistic directors over the past few years.
Filin told reporters Monday as he was leaving the hospital that he's still seeing as if through a mist as his eye treatment is continuing, and added that he will have to undergo further eye surgery in Germany.
"I don't care about my face, my hair, my looks," he said in the television interview. "I'm ready to be completely bald, look like a Frankenstein. It will have no impact on my heart, on my soul. All my inner self, all my energy is focused on recovering eyesight."

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Hundreds of giddy Ravens fans poured into the streets Sunday night, whooping, hollering, dancing, and high-fiving complete strangers as they celebrated the team's 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
Patrons who had packed into Mother's Federal Hill Grille to watch the team's second Super Bowl appearance since the team arrived in Baltimore in 1996 jumped up onto the bar and began belting out a rendition of the Queen song "We are the champions," as bartenders sprayed purple party string into the air.
"I love this team. I love this city!" screamed Andrew Bieler, 21, immediately after the game ended.
Michael Falls, 25, said he plans to take Monday off from his accounting job and his boss was going to do the same.
"I'm going to live up the night," he said.
Footage from local television stations showed police mounted on horseback circling around the crowds to maintain order.
"The Baltimore Ravens once again demonstrated strength, poise, and perseverance as they prevailed in Super Bowl XLVII," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a statement.
The mayor urged fans to celebrate responsibly and noted that hundreds of additional police officers were patrolling the streets to "ensure a safe environment."
Fans wearing the team's signature black-and-purple jerseys and purple-feathered boas said they were especially happy for retiring middle linebacker Ray Lewis, No. 52, the only current player who started with the team when it came to the city.
The victory celebration is "90 percent for Ray, 10 percent for the city of Baltimore," said Darren Love, 40.
